If you want to try fixing the machine yourself, now you are at the point where taking it apart might be useful.  If you use a repair shop, they charge about $75/hour for labor, it took me about 3 hours to recently diagnose & replace the LCD on my Lenovo 3000 N200 0769.  Saving the $200 in labor was, for me, the difference between junking my laptop and re-habbing it.     For some people, putting $150 into parts is not worth it when you can buy a new laptop for $500 or a netbook for $300.  I enjoy tinkering with my computers & feeling like I'm in charge of them, not vice versa. 

    Do note that you have a functioning machine at the moment, it's just not a laptop any more, it's more of a very small desktop that requires an external monitor.   It's always nice to have a backup unit for whatever computing you do.

   You need to find a source for repair &/or parts depending on where you live & how much time you have.

LOL my mistake. I just realized you were typing and the screen went dim. Yeah that would be hardware related. If he is tech savvy, it wouldn't be a bad idea to check the lcd screen cable.

i changed all of the display settings so it wont go to sleep, hibernate, go to screen saver, or dim the display at all. plus it works perfectly fine hooked up to the desktop monitor.

Send that machine to service. You can't fixed that kind of problem in you house.

    I don't agree that the problem is unfixable at home.  I fixed the identical problem just this week on my Lenovo 3000 N200 0769, using only fine screwdrivers and the videos & hardware manuals at this & other Lenovo-sponsored web sites with the parts spread out on top of the guest bed.  Whether it's worth your while to do that or not is up to you.

Hi all,

we owne a G555, and we have the "dark LCD" problem.

the problem should be the backlight switch, controlled by the little magnet in the LCD.

the switch is on the mainboard, close to the headphone jack, because if we move a magnet close to that area,

the backlight comes up and the LCD is fine...... for some milliseconds

we don't want to exchange the complet mainboard, but the switch, or shortcut the switch contacts.

Has anyone any detaile information, which are the switch contacts. I can identify the headphone jack contacts.

Perfect would be a platine layout picture, which is not a part of the Lenovo service manual, I found on the Lenovo support website.

External display works fine, but that's just a workaround for the moment.

the ORANGE circle shows the headphone jack (with contacts)

the YELLOW circle shows the "sensible magnetic area".

any idea? any chance to get a layout with the parts locations?
