Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

Wolfrider - I like your thinking. I have Acronis, and also do a nightly backup to a second hard drive. It also uses a boot CD.  I am highly confident of the integrity of this solution.  It the event of a major problem, I can boot from my recovery CD, and restore from my backup drive.

So, my question to anyone who can answer is this:

If I resize my C and D partitions (understanding that this will compromise One Key Recovery), is there anything I need to do if I want  to disable one key recovery - or can I just ignore it knowing that I should not rely on it?

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

sorry Ken I can not help. However, I would like to know more about these backup thinges. I have not resized my drive and still plan to rely on One Key for a full restore but because I will not set up the first basic back up I would like to get rid of the pop up on the bottom right from One Key asking me to start the back up. My free space in "C" is 13.5 today.

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

Hmmm. I've only got 8 GB free (out of 20) on C.  I've got 2.8 GB of program files, 1.7 GB in users,  and 9.5 GB in Windows along.

So bizarre, that with a 500 GB hard disk, Lenovo only alloted 20GB to C.  Just makes no sense at all.

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

It is hard to understand how a company with the IBM knowledge could make such a mistake in alloting space on the "C: drive.  It is almost impossible to put programs on the "D" drive without srinking the size of the "C".

They store a lot of information in a hidden folder called "program data".

They made a big error and refuse to correct it.

What really bothers me and causes me to caution my friends about buying Lenovo, is that they know it is a problem.  They monitor these forums, and they refuse to suggest a solution.

They go out of their way to creat the impression that they do not care.  So why should trhey expect any customer loyalty.

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

During my research of getting my machine working I asked the computer techie at my work about this.
This is hearsay so take this info for what's it's worth.  It's also second hand so somethings I don't understand all that well may got lost in the translation.

I was told that Lenovo initially tried to produce this machine with a 30 GB addon to the motherboard which would serve as the boot sector.  This was not supposed to be part to te HD, it was standalone.  Then the HD would serve as the C drive.

But the chasis box would not allow this addon to fit on the motherboard, so Lenovo had to scramble to find a solution.  And that's what we ended up with.  Makes perfect sense to me...a bad design, poor support, no documentation and no fix.

Again, this might be incorrect but it makes perfect sense to me in hindsight.

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

Just got off the phone with Lenovo tech support.  A pretty knowledgeable and friendly person, BTW.

In talking to her about the size of the C partition, she acknowledged that "some people have expressed that they are not happy with the size of that partition".

When I talked about resizing the C partition, she of course stated that one key recovery would no longer work.  I said that I'm fine with that since I use Acronis sector by sector backup and can back up and resore both the C and D partitions easily. Other than loosing the 30 GB or so for the hidden partition, that's solution is fine for me.

She also offered that I can turn off the nag about doing a base backup if the C partition gets too small by:

- going into MSCONFIG
- startup
- disable "loadtray.exe"

Be careful with this.  When we were having problems if we ignored the warnings, we got more serious warnings and the PC would finally lock up.  (presumably for not having enough memory available to run its operations.)  You may not want your PC to crash in the middle of something important.

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

Keno, Tanks for asking about the base backup Pop up for me. I looked at the Loadtray line and am affraid It will cut off all of the Pop ups off the loadtray or disable the loadtray all together I guess I could always re enable it if that is so. What do you think, Red. Also, by the way my C is 30GBs and running with 12.9 free today

Re: Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature

Sorry guys. I misunderstood. Ok it is not all about me. I have never created a base back up after my last reload of the system so Its not the warning I get but a reminder to start the one key instant recovery back up files by creating the first base back up. That is what support told me not to do or I would fill up the C drive and start getting the warnings. It has been working for at least three weeks.

The support person I spoke with in Canada, also advised me to disable some OneKey services (in Windows Services - I'll post their names later tonight) so that it wouldn't even try to do a backup.  The tech I spoke with was an expert in Systems and seemed very senior.  I was expecting the worst in support after reading the tech horror stories here.

FYI - I used Acronis Disk Director to remove the D partition and then I used Vista Disk Services (in Adminstrator Tools) to "extend" the C: drive partition to use the unallocated space on the disk.  Now with Acronis True Image Home 11 as a Backup solution the system is stable and secure.
