Dynamic Buffer warning

Model 3000 K100 #57061330
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 3072MB DDR2, 500GB HD, Vista Home Premium

Had computer for about 3 weeks now, been getting the "Warning" " The free dynamic buffer in the current system is insufficient; it is recommended to release the dynamic buffer by updating the Base Backup" pretty much daily. I update the backup and its OK for a day or so.

Not sure what the buffer is exactly,
Ram shows using 1300 of 3058
C: 5gig free of 29gig partition
D: 380 gig free of 418.
Using 2GB ultra II sd card for ReadyBoost
I downloaded and checked the Onekey Recovery user guide but that was pointless, 15 mb  of legal jargon, no useful info.

Any suggestions of what to do to avoid this warning??? Once the warning message appears, it pretty much stays on the screen until I update the backup. Its just plain annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

Anything in the error log?

1.

Open Problem Reports and Solutions by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Problem Reports and Solutions.

2.

In the left pane, click View problem history.

3.

To view problems by product, date, problem type, or solution status, click the column name.

Regards,

James

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

Thanks for the suggestion, I checked there and no problems seemed to be related to the OneKeyRecovery warning.

I called Lenovo Tech support, their suggestion was that there was not enough space left on the C: partition for the backup the onekey program does, and I should move any applications I installed to the D:. to free up space.

I did that and freed up maybe a gig. Now it shows 6gig free of 29.2g, which is about the same as before, however now it indicates 20%free where as before it said 10%, can't figure that one out. Anyway, I havent had the warning pop up again yet, today. No matter, it can only be a temporary fix, its pretty hard to keep everything away from that c partition. Not much space to work with.

Still open to other suggestions.
Thanks

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

Get a utility like PartedMagic, to shrink the D partition (at it's start) and add that free space to your C partition.

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

Actually this is built into the disk management of vista.

Administrator tools, Computer Management, and then go to Disk Management.

Go to drive 0, and shrink volume of  D by right clicking on it and choosing shrink volume. Then you should be able to extend volume of drive C.

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

I had asked the Lenovo tech support rep about this and he warned against doing it, said it could mess things up and I may then have to reinstall the OS.

Have you had experience with that utility?

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

that part maybe true, I dont have the recovery system on D drive anymore, so I can restore the system to factory defaults.

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

Model 3000 K100 #57061334

Here's what I've experienced.  If anyone has been advised of a suitable workaround, I'd love to hear it.   This has been very frustrating and is absolutely an engineering snafu from Lenovo.

I had identical issues to OP.  Quickly ran out of space on C: and had to go back and uninstall everything and re-install on D:.  Then had to make new directories on D: for My Documents, My Videos, etc.

Even with that done, there are so many files that need to go on C: that 30G just isn't enough. (pagesys is 2.5G for instance)

Tech support has told me the following: (paraphrased)

1) If I can't remove anything else from c: the only way to fix the problem would be to use the restore to factory settings option (wiping out everything on C: (but not on D:smileyhappy: and starting that partition fresh.)    This isn't an option atm because I have some small programs and utilities (such as VPN) installed that would be a pain to reconfigure.

2) Lenovo's One Key Recover requires the partitions to remain as when shipped to work correctly.  Any resizing of the partitions (especially C:smileyhappy: will render One Key Recover (and the system restore) useless.

3) They do not support or recommend any partition software and doing so voids your warantee.

So...I'm between a rock and a hard place.
My last phone call to Lenovo tech support was 30 minutes ago.  I was hoping that if enough people made them aware of how much trouble this is, they might come up with a solution.  (nope)

I'm going to do a little more research to see if any of these forums users have a better solution.
If not I'm am going to
  • void my warantee
  • make my c: drive bigger
  • uninstall Lenovo One Key Recovery
  • install another program to ensure my files are backed-up properly and
  • never buy Lenovo again.

Re: Dynamic Buffer warning

if you dont mind loosing your one key recovery other options are still available try using acronis tru image or norton's save and restore they are worth it...on the other hand before doing other things its better if you created recovery discs before hand just in case
