I'm not familliar with all of the packages mentioned in the list, but certainly Wine is not the "equivalent or better" of running native Windows programs, and you can't run a small business with GnuCash without quite a bit more HR investment than you can with Quickbooks.

Leave the hype to Windows, its not what Linux is about...

Thanks for your input. As I stated I did not create all of the list, so there may be a better and easier alternative than GnuCash.

I will try to look it up later.

Another POV is that Windows is Locked Down, Linux is Open Sourced. Where when you come across a issue or error in windows they tell you it can't be done or you can not do that, Linux users say I can fix that. Everyday users that run into issues or something they would like to do reports it, The Linux Community (which is any user that knows what to program) fixes the issue and it gets released in a future update. Windows has an useless registry, linux no, Windows uses to much of your services and ram, linux very little ram used and services only run when the program is ran, does not stay on to cause conflicts like windows, windows NTFS needs to be defragged, linux's ext4 does not, windows AV companies create viruses to stay in business, no body wastes time to create viruses for linux (almost next to impossible) Mac and Linux have been hit before (no ones perfect) when about 70-80% use windows would you create a virus for anything else (I think not) And the reason RedHat is not free it's owned by M$.

Oh forgot about this. Did you know that legaly your windows lisence is invalid if your PC is damaged by a Virus?

Re: Need help making the switch to Ubuntu?

It is a handy list, I just think the note in the header about "equal to or better and free" is misleading. (Just curious, is Ubuntu pretty careful to include only "libre-" free software?)

I mention the Gnucash problem because I tried to convert a small, non-profit cooperative I was an officer with to Linux while convincing them to spend about $4000 on PCs and Linux support rather than $6000 on shiny new Macs. After spending weeks checking around everyone seemed to agree Linux had nothing to offer comparable to Quickbooks that didn't cost a great deal more in support _and_ require learning new systems that didn't have general applicability. I guess you could develop GnuCash to do any small business task with enough effort, but that isn't going to convince anyone who isn't already dedicated to FOS to convert...

Re: Need help making the switch to Ubuntu?

Mrpeter1985,

Hmm.. I'm not sure that's how I'd interpret the warranty statement in the EULA.

I don't think it means that your license is void if you get a virus, but rather that the warranty of the performance of the software might be void.  I would also postulate that it's not a permanent void.  Reloading should be fine.

My interpretation is that MS is reasonably saying that if the OS malfunctions because it is infected by a virus that they aren't responsible to fix the code.  I.e. if you escalate a bug as a normal course of action, they would support it under the terms of the warranty, but if the bug were the result of virus corruption, then they aren't on the hook.

In any event - interesting discussion, but in practice... clean the virus or reload, right?

Plenty of good reasons to like Windows or to like Linux.

Different strokes for different folks, right?

Mark

LOL thats a good way of putting it.

I'm not sure where that part is in the EULA. Some Linux user had it as there signature. I thought it was funny. I would like to find it myself to see what it fell along.

I do love my XP though, Nothing can beat gaming with XP. he he

Open source doesn't mean free. Remember that guys.

The best OS for the user is that one who can use for their own needs.
