Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Thanks, George, for trying to help, but that was not it. I still have the yellow exclamation mark next to that driver you recommended.

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Try downloading the firmware update that is on the same page that I've linked...

Good luck.

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

That firmware upgrade didn't work, George. The problem still exists.

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Hi George, thanks for the offer of help. I, too, was a bit weary and took a break after a couple days of intense troubleshooting. However, I started afresh and made a few discoveries, today.

Without my external Cisco Linksys compact wireless-g  USB adapter connected to the USB port, all is well in the Device Manager - no conflict at all, with an icon on the taskbar that says "ThinkVantage Access Connections IBM High Rate Wireless LAN PCI MiniPCI Combo Card #2" and another icon a "Default - Wireless LAN Configuration Utility". If I reboot the system with the external Linksys wireless adapter attached to the USB port, both of the icons in the taskbar disappears and device manager has a conflict. Take it out and reboot with no external wireless adapter, then both icons reappears on the taskbar and there is no conflict in Device Manager.

Don't worry about it?

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Honestly, the only conflicts I ever worry about are the ones that show up in BIOS while booting, but you don't have that issue.

Given the very limited performance that your combo card will give you even under the best of circumstances, I would just stick with the external one. I might even remove the IBM card to be on the safe side...

Unfortunately, R32 has the worst reputation amongst older ThinkPads in getting the "other" cards to work in it. I've read reports that generic Intel 2200BG worked for some owners, but failed for others.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

On another note, what could cause my  Matshu**bleep**a dvd/rom drive to not be recognized by the computer. There is no cd/dvd rom icon and no presence of it being in Device Manager. When I press the open button at the side, the dvd rom tray opens up and when closed, the power light comes on and it runs for a while and then stops working.  What could be wrong, here?

I do know that it works, as I swapped it out and installed it in another R32 Thinkpad and it works fine.  It once worked.

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Go into BIOS, choose "startup" and change the boot mode to "diagnostics". Press F10 to save and exit.

Computer will now verify every single component while booting. Look to see whether your media drive is recognized.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

No, it is not listed at startup.

Re: IBM Thinkpad R32 Series Laptop Problems

Try another drive and see what happens.

If the second drive is not seen either, you have a motherboard problem.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George
