On my Lenovo R500 ( 2714-8UG) windows XP with most current updated from Microsoft Update page installed I get following behavior.
System does not respond to any key , needs a POWER-OFF reboot, while the task manager shows an idle CPU.
Therefore I've used the Thinkvantage tool in order to check and update the Driver.
This worked for all, but the Wifi 5100AGN driver, that did not finish the install.
Could you please give me a hint how to resolve the System Hang ?

does this constantly happens? is the win xp provided by lenovo? also is the thinkvantage rescue and recovery been installed?

I have been looking for a solution for the same issue and I just found this topic.
I have a Lenovo R500 on Win XP and it's freezing the same as you described in the first post.
Since I don't have any errors in the event viewer i don't know what and where to look for, in order to find something that could help me fix this.
If you know how to fix this please let us know.
