Turn off ultrabay to save battery?

Is it possible to automatically power down the optical drive in my R61 ultrabay when I either (a)  switch to a maximum battery life power plan or (b) go into sleep mode?  I noticed that in both of these cases, the optical drive is still powered, and I'd like to save battery power by turning it off.  I realize I can manually "safely remove hardware" to do this, but was curious if it could be automated for either of these cases...

The latest thinkvantage power managment software has the option to do that.
