Unable to read DVD DL discs

I have a lenovo thinkpad r61 8933 with a DVD Multiwriter disc.

Earlier it used to read dual layer DVDs but off late I have ended up wasting money on PCQuest discs which have been dual layer discs. At first I thought it was a one-off case but now I'm 5 discs down.

If it is a software problem could you point me to the required download or hardware diagnostic tool I need to use?

PC Doctor is not useful in this case so please advise something different.

let me guess a panasonic drive?

Yes.. I mean its detected as Mat**bleep**a which I think is Panasonic only.

Is there a known issue with these drives?

Would you have any idea of how to resolve this?

the panasonic drive is quite bad as compared to the Hitachi LG version, i have several Panasonic drive doing funny things (all hardware problems).
