"Package did not install" with System Updates

This happens with any update that I pick in System Update, (version 3) on my R61i 7650CDU,
it appears as if it's about to install the update and then I get the message "Package did not install"

I've turned off firewalls, counter spy programs, and anti-virus...to no avail.

Anyone have a similar experience or a clue as to why System Update appears to be useless?

I have the same problem and my system update need to use 1 min to get 800kB update message. It is acceptable. So suck software. Missing software installer

I can't say for certain that this is the resolution to the problem, but system updates started working again once I uninstalled a damaged Microsoft  .NET Framework 2.0 installation and installed a new 3.0 .NET Framework.

Any joy with resolution on this? I have .net framework 3 service pack 2 & .net framework 3.5 sp1, & system update still doesn't work.....
