SL500 coninous fan

Hello, I just received my new Lenovo SL500 (NRJ9AGE). I switched it on and since then....

the fan is running continously. This is very annoying.

I have already installed all the updates with the "ThinkVantage"-Tool but the fan does not slow down.

What must be done get a quiet SL500?

I use WindowsXP SP2.

Re: SL500 coninous fan

My SL400 whines only during multitasking when I run Oracle RDMS along with couple of other programs, of course the fan could perhaps be running all the times in the background but it becomes audible to me only the instances when I throw demanding programs towards the laptop while running several programs in parallel.

Maybe you have got a faulty laptop or there's a software related issue with it.

Re: SL500 coninous fan

No, thank you for the hint, but nothing except the os is running. I am used to hear the fan if the computer is switched on, but after that it should become quieter. If you start to stess your notebook it should speed up the fan.

But this one doesn't even slow down.

Could it be, that it has to do with the BIOS? It was shipped with the version  1.07.

Yes it's possible, mine was shipped with version 1.06. The ThinkVantage tool nor the website is offering version 1.07 as of yet, who knows maybe the newer BIOS is casuing the problem to you fan.

Re: SL500 coninous fan

I tried it out.

I used following BIOS-Versions:

  • 1.05
  • 1.06
  • 1.07 (what was shipped with the machine)
  • 1.08

I got the following with the version 1.05: the notebook starts up quiet. After a view seconds the fan starts and stop after 1 or 2 minutes. 3 or 4 minutes later it starts again and do not stop.

It would be nice, if someone from Lenovo could post a statement here. Is this a normal behavior of a SL500?

Re: SL500 coninous fan

I don't think it's normal for the fan to continuously run without a reason. The reviewer on NBR also confirmed it for SL500:

"Heat and Noise

Lenovo did a fantastic job when engineering the SL500's heat dissipation methods.  The notebook remained cool to the touch even while running 3DMark.  The only place on the entire laptop that gets noticeably warm is the hard drive and graphics card region, which did manage to break the triple-digit barrier.  Fortunately, it's in the middle right side of the notebook, meaning that your palms and fingers will stay cool when typing.

As far as noise is conerned, you generally only hear the fans when the notebook is under stress or overly hot.  Even then, it's hard to hear them unless the room is pretty quiet.  Given most office environments, the noise the SL500 emits will hardly be noticeable."

Re: SL500 coninous fan

Yes, I know this article. And this one too:

http://www.notebookjournal.com/tests/633

So that is the reason why I am so disappointed.

Ok, now I have to see if I can compare two SL500 and try to get a response from the Lenovo-Support. Is there an email-address? I could not find one.

[ Edited ]

Hello,

there are some possibilities to control fan of your SL.

First try TPFancontrol by Troubadix or,

second PFControl,

it depends which one of programs you like more.

Kind regards

Andreas
