ThinkPad SL500 generating a lot of heat

My LenovoThinkPad SL500 ( 2746-4EG) generates a lot of heat – even grille above cooler burned and felt out. It makes no major difference what power plan I’m using (I’ve even tried to create my own power plan with only 20% of processor usage – it makes no difference) nor what operating system: Vista or XP – still generates a lot of heat. I’m neither playing games nor running “heavy” programs - only text editor and “Google Chrome”. Moreover, I’ve changed switchable graphics to energy saving mode – still no use.

Maybe someone has an idea how to solve this annoying problem?

Looks like I've solved this problem by myself: few minutes around all vents with powerful fan made a difference - now ThinkPad is Ok again.

I have the same problem with a 1810 fan error displaying at boot. My doubt is if the fan is working at all or is it broken.

How did you manage to force the fan power? I tried with different softwares but none worked.

What do you mean when you write "few minutes around with all vents"??? (my English sucks almost like my tech skills...)

I'd try taking off the keyboard and visually inspecting the fan.

I'm assuming you also have an SL500. Here is the disassembly manual:
