Connect an external display

I recognize how basic this question is, but for the life of me I cannot get my brand new T410s to display anything on my external monitor sitting on my desk. I've updated drivers, dropped the resolution down, and tried new cables, all to no avail.

 

Seriously, I have plugged my monitor into the monitor port at the back-right of my laptop and do not even get a signal to the external monitor.

 

Does anybody have any suggestions?
