Here's videos on what it is and how to install it. You have to have virtualization enabled in the bios. It should be under the security heading in the bios.
XP mode requires a certain amount of RAM in order to run. So, when you chose XP mode, what you paid for was the increase in RAM in order for it to run.

I also have a T420s with the option of XP onboard. Since I havn't had the need to switch from windows 7 to XP, I was wondering if there is an easy way to purge XP from my system. How much hard drive space does it take up on my machine? I have a rather small 160gb capacity SSD.

X2222,
If you never enabled virtualization in the bios or downloaded and installed xp mode from microsoft, then it's not there. Nothing to get rid of.

There are two virtual machine software that i use : parallel and vmware.
I personally prefer Parallel.
Good luck!
