I wanted to mention that I was able to install SP1 the day it was relesased using the standalone 950MB file for x64 machines. I had with the old driver that came with the machine and did not even know of the problem with SP1, IE9 and switchable graphics. The installation completed quickly and there was no block due to video drivers or errors whatsoever.

I had also manually downloaded and installed SP1 over the old graphics driver. Later, when the latest Lenovo/AMD driver was released, I installed it over SP1 without a problem. Also, follow the Colonel's advice and make sure your machine is using the discrete driver prior to updating, not the integrated driver; or download the Lenovo driver and install/update it manually via Device Manager.
Also, if you do decide to do a clean factory restore, then I think you'd have the option to not install / ignore all the patches other than SP1. Since SP1 includes all the Windows updates prior to its release, you would then only need to install patches released after SP1.
