Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: Switchable graphics - NEW issues with 8.752.4 video drivers - crashes on In

[ Edited ]

@JameZ,

I do have to back up Edbert on this one: what happens when those software are actually released? The problems will not go away on their own, and if you read the Mozilla Bug thread referenced above, they have clearly indicated that the old intel driver is at fault. So one day, FF4 will be released, and BOOM, suddenly not just the beta adopters are affected, but everyone using switchable graphics on a T400/T500.

I understand that beta software is not supported by you, and issues can arise out of using them. But the whole idea of beta testing is to iron out bugs, to find bugs and fix them in time for release. This time there clearly is a problem with the Intel drivers and certain software - so it is really "just" building a new driver package that needs to be done on the part of Lenovo.

I put "just" in quotes, because I realize building a display driver package might be a much more complex operation than most of us ever think. And I do acknowledge that engineers are lazy by default (I will admit to it myself :smileyhappy: ), thus not wanting to do anything that needs not be done right now. But dismissing this problem because it appears with beta software and standing by idly until it hits a bigger audience it just not the best way to handle things.

And finally, those KBs that seem to bring out these issues are NOT IN BETA. They are available from Microsoft now and today. One of the updates in question, KB2028560, will be included in Windows 7 SP1 (which really is just around the corner), so it will be installed for everyone using Windows 7, not just those who update to IE9. (you can check the official list of updates that will be included in SP1 here: Windows 7 SP1 Updates included)

MSN 2011 is officially out, so that's not quite helpful.

(Although MSN 2011 kinda sucks, IMHO.)

Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: Switchable graphics - NEW issues with 8.752.4 video drivers - crashes on In

@Edbert and lenardg,

In order to use beta software to reproduce a problem is a "no" from engineering as they are not officially released yet. If they were to fix it in beta stage then what if when its official then its different again? So we would need to fix it again if MS or FF were to change something when it's official?

Also I've tried installing KB2028560 package only however am getting an error that the package is not valid for installation on the T400, guess it needs to be installed via IE9 now or wait till SP1 for Win 7 is released.

Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: Switchable graphics - NEW issues with 8.752.4 video drivers - crashes on In

@JameZ: I think we're debating this in the wrong way now. If I take Lenovo's position, then we somehow wrongly think that there is a problem. But no, there is no problem because problems exist *by definition* only if they are triggered by released software. But the dispute was not a merely verbal one. It was about a piece of hardware that has never been running in a way that makes your customers satisfied. Never. User satisfaction does not change by changing definitions.

The question for Lenovo is thus: Do you want to provide an solution that makes your customers happy or do you want to make your staff (lawyers, controllers, managers, ...) happy by being able to tell them: No, we don't have a problem.

I just *hope* that Lenovo has working drivers by the time when the actually used software by your customers has been declared "released". You've chosen to violate common sense and been warned.

@JameZ,

To add to lmzi's point, if you follow the posts, you'll see that the problem (which DOES exist) is not even IE9 or FF4. The problem is caused by a Windows Update (KB2028560), that right now is optional, but will be pushed into our machines anytime soon. Engineering 's excuse of using the "beta software" tag to do nothing, just shows total irresponsability on Lenovo's part, because like I said, it is not the "beta software" that's causing the problem, but an actually released Windows Update, which is NOT beta. And my question still remanis: What will Engineering do whe the update is actually released? Do we all need to go through a similar driver fiasco, where we waited exactly a year for broken driver release, that solved one problem (the problem where both cards where active after waking up from sleep) but created another (the conflicting Intel driver)?

Being beta is indeed a good point, although it'd be nice to have a promise of a solution after it such GPU-based programs officially release.

@JameZ

Sucess - after 3 motherboards, my problem is fixed.

No more freezing, ATI drivers work and I can switch without issue now.

On a side note, KB2028560 has been superseded by KB2454826, which is automatically installed by Windows Update, beginning January 11, 2011. This update still conflicts with the Intel driver.

@Edbert,

Am unable to get any failure with the KB2454826 installed.

Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: Switchable graphics - NEW issues with 8.752.4 video drivers - crashes on In

I will probably reinstall my T500 next week with Windows 7 SP1, when it becomes available on MSDN. I can then test if there are any issues with the switchable graphics. This time around I do not intend to "pollute" my install with Beta software.

@JameZ,

OEMs should have received Windows 7 SP1 yesterday. Do you have access to it, so you could check if there are any issues with it?
