Recommended docking station for T430

Searched Lenovo.com but it has no specific listings for T430. Looking for a dock that would give me a dual monitor setup.

Also, I only have the integrated HD4000 card, can I still get dual video from the dock?

thanks!

Re: Recommended docking station for T430

Hello parthan-

This docking station should be compatible with your T430: ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 It doesn't list the T430 but I am showing it to be compatible.  Your HD4000 card should be able to support two monitors as well.

I hope that helps!

Ed

There are four other docks that should work with the T430:

ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 – 4337-10U
• ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 4337-15U
ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 – 4338-10U
• ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 4338-15U

As I understand it the regular docks have 1 VGA, 1 DVI and 1 DisplayPort while the Plus version has 1 VGA, 2 DVI and 2 DisplayPort. In all cases however you can only use any two of the ports at the same time to drive two external displays. So you would need the Plus version only if you wanted to use 2 of the same port type simultaneously.

I figured I should have included the other docks but I thought that having two ports of the same type would be more beneficial. If I was using dual monitors I would probably use the two DVI ports for the monitors; that's only how I would set it up. Those above are all viable options.

Anyway, thanks for extra (important) information! :smileyvery-happy:

Best regards,

Ed

Hi Ed,

It really depends on what ports are on your monitors and if you're prepared to use different interfaces to drive them.

There's one more issue. The dock you linked to (433830U) comes with a 170W AC adapter while the others I linked to come with 90W adapters. A T430 with Intel graphics runs fine on 90W so there's no need to get a more powerful and, I presume, more expensive, dock. Also your dock is the USB 2.0 port model. The T430 comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports.

P.S. I know it's confusing. I'm considering getting a dock for my T430s and it took me quite some time to find all my options and determine what are their differences.

Re: Recommended docking station for T430

Thanks for all the info. Yeah a plus model with 90 W seems sufficient. The documentation about these on the website could be improved. The 'compare selected' feature is not helpful at all.

So as far as the resolution on the external monitors, I assume I'm only going to get what HD4000 supports (1600 X 900 in my case)?

Re: Recommended docking station for T430

No, you should be able to output whatever the monitor supports. I have my T430 hooked up to an 24" samsung monitor (no dock, yet) via a mini displayport/DVI cable @ 1920x1200

More precisely it depends on a variety of factors including the graphics subsystem and chipset used by the T430, whether you're using a docking station or port replicator, number of external monitors attached, type of port used and the monitor itself.

For ThinkPads the specifications are available via PSREF. For the T430:

Maximum external resolution:

• 2560x1600@60Hz (DisplayPort via optional Mini DP cable)
• 1920x1200@60Hz (single-link DVI-I via optional Mini DP cable)

• 2048x1536@75Hz (VGA)

The specifications for the particular dock you intend to use will have any additional restrictions.
