Recovery / Start Menu

Last night my T520 unexectedly did not boot correctly and went through the recovery process.

 

After that finished, Windows 7 seemed to work fine but I am having to re-tweak many of the settings. For example, I had to turn "clear type" back on, reset email addresses in Outlook, etc....

 

One thing I cannot fix is the "frequently opened programs" on the start menu. The settings are set to list 10 programs, however it is blank.

 

Any suggestions on what I should try?

Update: I have tried restoring to earlier restore points and it is failing.

Looks like other people are having the same issue, but I can't find a solution.
