Sound suddenly stopped working and...

I believe I did some system updates and windows updates and all of a sudden my sound is not working. I'm not sure if it was because of the updates but i dont even get the sound gauge anymore when i push the volume buttons on my thinkpad. By the way I have a T400 and I also get the message:

On screen display message generator for ThinkPad has stopped working

Sigh.... my thinkpad has so many problems.. Please help, thanks.

Yes! Same here. Everything was fine. Then I did some OS updates. And now, no sound.

More importantly: it's not just Windows!  I have Linux installed in another partition and the sound no longer works in Linux either.

It really is a Lenovo hardware/BIOS thing, not a Microsoft thing.
