Squeak noise on a brand new T400

I've recently bought a T400 and I'm experiencing weird noises from it. It's a constant sound that comes on now and then for some time and then goes off. I can't really describe the sound, it's like a whine or a squeak. I tried catching this sound on my camera, you can check it out and see if you can hear it.

Youtube video 1

Youtube video 2

You can hear the squeak sound constantly in the beginning of video 1, then it stops. It's constantly on throughout video number 2. I'm not quite sure where the sound is coming from. The computer is not under any stress when this happens. Could this be from the SSD?

Here are my computer specifications:

Intel Core 2 Duo processor P8700 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
Win 7 Professional 64bit
ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB
14.1 WXGA+ TFT, w/ LED Backlight
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
128 GB Solid State Drive, Serial ATA
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
Express Card Slot
ThinkPad WiFi (BGN)
Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable

All ideas and suggestions on this matter are appreciated.

Decided to bump this thread up a bit since I'm still having this problem described above.

Also, my CPU suddenly  started to make strange noises, I decided to update the BIOS to see if it stopped. My previous BIOS version was 3.06, it's now 3.09 and the CPU noise seems to have stopped, I'll probably know for sure after running the computer some more on the newly updated BIOS.

I still haven't identified the squeaking noise described above. I've tried running tcpfancontrol and shut down the fan when this happens, the squeaking still exists even though the fans are off so this is definitely not a fan squeak. This is so strange, only happens occasionally.

I'm kind of hoping my squeaking problem has been solved with the BIOS update too...fingers crossed...

**EDIT: Didn't work, the squeaking still exists and comes on and off.

Are you referring to the CPU noise I was talking about or the other squeak noise that I showed in my videos?

Actually, the CPU whine hasn't bothered me today since I updated the BIOS earlier. I shouldn't celebrate just yet since I've only been running the computer for a few hours since I updated.

The other squeaking noise is driving me crazy, I can't find any solution to that one...

Re: Squeak noise on a brand new T400

Hi, I have the same issue of hearing the squeaking as well on my T400.  I've noticed that it only happens when I am plugged in; when running on batteries, the squeaking sound goes away (immediately).  I hope the moderators can provide us with a solution ASAP, as the squeaking is distracting and annoying.

Yeah I'm hoping for some solution to this problem. The CPU whine is still present as well.

But the squeaking noise is a lot more annoying. It happens both when plugged in and off plug in my case.

Re: Squeak noise on a brand new T400

I got my T400 earlier this week.

I have the same problem.

The noise is driving me crazy, giving me headaches and stuff.

What should I do?

Have you guys tried calling lenovo and see if they can do anything about it?

Please, let me know. Thanks.

I haven't called Lenovo yet to tell them about my problem, I have sent them emails though. I'm probably in a worse situation than you guys, I ordered my laptop from Lenovo USA and I'm in Iceland. I can't return it in for technical support. But it does have International Warranty in Iceland and perhaps I can use the retail seller here in Iceland that services the machine to take a look at this for me.

The main problem is that I can't really be without my laptop at the moment. Work is crazy these days and I'm also in University and the exams are coming up. I'm really surprised a brand like Lenovo Thinkpad has a major flaw like this that many people are experiencing and Lenovo are doing nothing to deal with it in any way!!

Re: Squeak noise on a brand new T400

Guys, one thing that will help you and the tech support to locate your problem is to find which device has caused the noise. For example, if it is CPU, then noise level should be proportional to CPU speed. If it's hard drive, then noise is correlated with HD LED indicator. This kind of diagnostics will be the first step toward a problem solution.
