Suggest good and proven HDD for t400?

[ Edited ]

Hi All,

Need to upgrade my T400 and T61 HDD. I want to have 7200 RPM 320GB. Is the upgrade quite noticeable, I mean the speed and performance? What can you recommend that is already tried and tested?

Thank you.

Re: Suggest good and proven HDD for t400?

I tested the Hitachi 7k320 and Seagate 7200.3  320gb 7200rpm hdds. The noise and vibration on the right palmrest were too annoying for me. In the end i decided to get a 500gb 5400rpm WD Scorpio blue. Almost same performance, similar price, no vibrations and more space too.

This is achieved by higher density platters (2x 250gb vs 2x160gb). A 7200rpm 500gb hdd will outperform it, but likely cause vibrations. If you dont mind that, go ahead.

The vibrations are not that disturbing but they are there, you can def feel them sometimes when you touch the palmrest. Unfortunately the T400s chassis is quite thin so its just a law of physics.

Thanks for your suggestion. Indeed the 5400 RPMs are the quietest so far. So what is the best 7200 RPMs out there? Of course the 7200s are the fastest. In terms of less vibration and not too much noise.

How about the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS compared to Western Digital Scorpio Black 7200?

Hoping for more feedback. Thanks again.

Interesting.  I'm running a Hitachi 320G 7200RPM drive in my T400 with no detectable vibration. On my T61, a Seagate 200G 7200RPM drive vibrated like crazy - tried two of them - but a Hitachi 200G drive was pretty close to vibration free.

I'm quite happy with the Hitachi in the T400. It is fast, quiet, and cool.  YMMV.

I  wonder if the reported manufacturing changes in the T-series keyboards and top bezels could explain the difference?

Re: Suggest good and proven HDD for t400?

Honestly the vibrations were not very disturbing but you could feel them if you tried. I am just paranoid like that. Softly touching the "Thinkpad" logo on the palmrest for example, made me feel vibrations. Same for the edges. Normal day use was ok. But comparing benchmarks, the 320er 7200 drives were just as fast as the 500GB 5400er WD, so i just went for that.

The 500GB 7200 are a different league. At this point, if 7200, i would go for a 500er. They come close to 100mb/sec, compared to 70-80 on the 320er and 500 5400er.

Also need to consider, noise and vibration varies depending on luck. I might have also had bad luck.
