Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

Can anybody upload an image of the T400 with the 4 cell?

And i just received another T400 with WXGA+ LED Backlit LCD, i will be calculating my numbers tomorow. Sold off theother T400 with 6 cell CCFL, so i cant take pictures side by side.

(i did a full battery of power measurements)

but just so you guys know, on this particular 9 cell, i should be able to achieve 11 hours in theory, with the wireless off.

anybody have weights for the different batteries?

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

alright, so here are numbers:

The unit idling, no screen or hard drive spinning, or wifi consumes 6 watts.

the wireless will consume anywhere from 2-5 watts, that is 2 watts minimum when enabled, 5 watts when transferring data

the CCFL Screen consumes 2.1 watts at minimum brightness, and consumes 7.8 watts at max brightness

the LED Screen consumes 1.8 watts at minimum brightness, 5.1 watts at maximum brightness

The webcam when in use consumes 2.2 watts

An Expresscard multimedia card reader consumes 0.25 watts idle

The optical drive will consume 1 watts when enabled, idle.

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

here is additionnal information:

Battery weights:

223 grams for lipoly ultrabay battery.

327 grams for 6 cell battery.

507 grams for 9 cell battery.

My dvd-cdrw weighs 147 grams.

Which means that exchanging the dvd burner for the ultrabay battery adds 76 grams.

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

Hello,

What is the weight of a T400 with a 4-cell battery vs. a T400 with a 6-cell battery? I understand the 6-cell battery weights 327 grams but I do not know the weight of the 4-cell battery.

Thank you.

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

[ Edited ]

assuming 60 grams per cell, we can approximate the 4 cell to weigh roughly 207 grams.

ROUGH APPROXIMATION:

9 cell: 507g, 6cell 327g,

507g - 327g = 180g [3 cells]

180/3 = 60g [per cell]

327-(60*2) = 207g [4cell]

The weight of the actual battery is probably higher, probably between 207g and 227g.

The weight of my T400 unit without dvd or battery is 1894 grams

With a 3 cell ultrabay battery, it weighs 2117 grams

With a 9 and 3 cell, it weighs 2625 grams

Standard dvd-rom CD-RW weighs 147 grams

So if we do :

[weight of unit]+[weight of optical drive]+[approximate weight of 4 cell]

1894+147+207=2248g

Hope it helps, and use this as an approximate weight.

Interesting - the difference in weight b/w a T400 w/ a 4-cell battery vs. a T400 w/ a 6-cell battery is ~ 120 grams, which isn't much at all. Going off Lenovo's data for the 4-cell and 6-cell batteries, the latter gives you ~ 2 more hours. An extra 120 grams for 2 more hours. Seems worth it to me. Opinions are appreciated. Thank you.

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

Let me offer a bit of experience, I use a T61p with 9-cell. Probably about as power-hungry as you can get. I get a bit over 3 hours out of the 9-cell. The 15" with a 9-cell is huge for use in coach on an airplane (note my prior laptops were an X40 and an X23, but I needed more power as I use the machine as a desktop replacement). I just purchased a T400 with a 4-cell for home to have a smaller machine. I expect I will also buy a 9 cell and carry both when I fly. I considered a T500 as it would use my  work-purchased batteries, but that extra inch of size does matter on a cramped airplane.

TheDude, how much time are you getting with the 4-cell battery? After reading lots and lots of threads on the 4-cell battery, it seems like, on average, you get about 2 hours with the settings unchanged and about 4 hours with the settings changed to optimize battery usage.

that sounds about right according to my numbers.

the unit, going nuts with everything at max and full tilt consumes roughly 30 watts, idling, it will consume perhaps about 10 watts on average.

3 cell: 10.8v, 2.7Ah, 30Wh (ultrabay)

4 cell: 14.4v, 2.6Ah, 38Wh

6 cell: 10.8v, 5.2Ah, 56Wh

9 cell: 10.8v, 7.8Ah, 84Wh

By those numbers, Average usage (wifi off, office work) gets you about 4 hours on the 4 cell, about 1.26H roughly full load. internet browsing gets you about 2-3 hours

Keep in mind that my config is with integrated video card though, and that 10 watts figure is without wifi enabled. with it enabled, expect closer to 12W

i get a little over 1 hour when my cpu is at full load on my ultrabay battery (at 95% charge), so i am fairly confident my number crunching is accurate.

Re: T400 & T500 Battery size - what sticks out and what doesn't? *EMBEDDED IMAGES*

x3r -

sorry, don't have the 400 yet. I only have 9 cell for my 61p.  On my old X40, 4 cell was good for a bit under 2 hours, while the extended (6 cell?, a long time ago) would pull over 4.  Now that was old Centrino, so not much use to compare.  Once I've trid the 400 for a while I'll compare (I also expect to get a 9-cell and will give that info too.).  All my experience is based on overseas flights (only time I am away from power that long) and not done with a stopwatch.
