T400 with Horizontal Lines that then went blank

[ Edited ]

I have a T400 Laptop that approximately 6 months ago had some horizontal lines appear across the bottom of the screen where the Taskbar would be.  Then around the end of July, I got lines across the entire screen, making it unreadable.  I could hook up an External Monitor, and it would show correctly on it.  Then the entire screen was black except approx 1/4 inch at the top with a white line across it.

Now, the screen is totally blank, and it will not boot.  There is not Hard Drive Activity at all.

I have removed the power and battery, turned back on.  Held the FN button for 10 seconds to make sure it wasn't asleep, and the system still will not boot, and the screen is shot.

I have owned in the past the following, and loved all of them.

600E

T23

T43

The system information is as follows:

Type: 7417-CTO

SN: xxxxxxx

Purchased around December 2008.

LED Screen.

I have always bought Thinkpads because I have been very happy with them.

I spent $1,800.00 to have this one custom built, and right now I am very dissatisfied with the product.

I would appreciate any help that you can provide for me to try and get my system working again.

Thank You

Mark

JameZ:

The issue I have is somewhat like that, but the lines went fully across the screen.

I am running Windows XP.

If there is a way that I can send you a file, I have a picture of what it looks like.

Thank You,

Mark

@pennme,

Try booting into BIOS and see if the lines appears there.

Re: T400 with Horizontal Lines that then went blank

The issue is that I was receiving lines accross the screen originally, now the screen is completely blanked out, except for approx 1/4 inch across the top. When I had the lines, and now, it happens as soon as the system is turned on, so the BIOS is not the issue.  Additionally, when there were lines across the screen, they would appear at all times, in the BIOS, when it booted, in the OS, at shutdown.  Now with the blank screen, the system will not even boot.  There is no activity with the hard drive.  So, it is a Hardware issue, not drivers.

Thanks,

Mark

@pennme,

If that's the case, kindly contact support to get the laptop checked.

Re: T400 with Horizontal Lines that then went blank

This is most likely due to a defective LCD cable...

Re: T400 with Horizontal Lines that then went blank

Who would I call, as in Phone Number, to work on getting it sent in for repair?

Also, what would the approximate cost be for replacing the LCD cable if that is what is wrong.

Thanks,

Re: T400 with Horizontal Lines that then went blank

Does your laptop have a descrete graphics card? If so, I hope you still have a warranty for that.

I think you graphics card is fried or broken. It could have probaby be also a partial DOA. Cause by the way you explain the display is the same as what happened to my desktop graphics card where there are basically line patterns on the whole screen.

If you do see lines even during BIOS screen, then I am pretty sure there is something wrong with your graphics card.

Agreeinglike calkenneth, I would have you call support. They should be able to refer you to the right extensions even though you could probably call the wrong number.
