Experiencing this error myself now. Havent yet tried the tapping or compressed air blowing.
I experienced this yesterday morning after setting the laptop on it's side leaning on a wall (in a closed position) over night. Turning it on presented the fan error. Then set the computer on the table in it's normal upright position for an hour or so and the fan came back on. Wrote it off at the time - unfortunately now it's back ![]()

Well luckily we havn't seen any hard fan failures where the unit is not starting at all.
However I just had 2 brand new T410 units comming in with the symptom of shutting down at random.
Running the stress test both CPU temps were getting up to 100+ degrees (C) a few seconds into the video portion then shutting down.
In both cases when opening up the units and examining the CPU fan, it turns out the thermal grease had not melted onto the CPU. In both instances I added a drop of thermal grease to the GPU and the CPU and fired thigns back.
This fix immediatley resolved the problem as both units ran the stress tests all the way through maxing out at ~80 degrees (C).

Just experienced "fan error" this morning on my t410 (bought April 2010). Used compressed air (on a box) and it got past the error, but had a sudden shutdown about 2 minutes after the OS was finished loading (overheated maybe?).
Took out the hard drive to back it up, called my vendor and now it's at a local IBM service office. Will report back here once I get it back.

CPU fan was replaced, got it back 1 week after I sent it in. Everything seems fine now ![]()

3 fan failures in 3 weeks for me here. They seemed to pop up again as most issues do.

Have your engineers found a root cause to this issue?
Can it be chalked up to bad sensors in the fan?

The fans that are going bad is FRU 45M2722
Are these all possible bad fans and being replaced with 45M2724?
If you don't know yourself that's fine but I would appreaciate getting the answer found out from engineering or another department.
We would like to be proactive on this if possible.
