T420s Pixelated Screen

Im a pro photographer,  and i used the Lenovo T60 for 5.5 years for photo editing and it was amazing. best screen ive ever seen in my life. 

Last month this laptop died, and i had to replace it with a new one. So because i loved the T60, i decided to go with something that is suppose to be very similar, but just better - the T420s. I spent tons of money on it (over $2,100 after a $1,000 discount), just so ill get the best system out there.

Unfortunatly, the T420s that i got have a really really bad screen. Worst ive ever seen. I can see each one of the pixels/lights that make the screen. not sharp, not accurate, really bad color range. 100% bad.

I called Lenovo, and they told me to send them the laptop so they'll replace the screen with a new one. So i sent it.

Got it back yesterday, and instead of replacing the screen they replaced the mother-board. why? i dont know. but guess what? screen is still horrible.

You can see how the screen looks like when you look at it from a normal-close distance.. maybe if you stand 6 feet away from the computer you wont have any issues....

Im losing money, because i have no way to edit the photos my clients hired me to take. I lost a month of work. all because of a horrible screen.

I would contcact the support center again and attach the file you attached to this forum to show them how bad it is, and that it's still not fixed. You should stress the fact that you paid top dollar for your machine and expect the service for replacement of the screen or even the laptop. I wish you luck on your work!

Just to show how it looks like... here is example of how it should look like (right), and how it looks like on the screen. im not talking about the colors (that are bad too.. but its not the issue here) - im talking about all the pixels!

I think you made several mistaken assumptions. Not hard to do, I struggle with some of those myself.  The T420S has a maximum screen resolution of 1600x 900 pixels. The T520 has a better resolution of  1920 x 1080. Those extra pixels count.

It is the curse of HDTV that laptops seldom exceed 1080 and most laptops have reverted to 900 vertical pixels. I struggled with this exact same issue when I bought a laptop for my sister. There are practically no models I can replace her now-aging laptop with and get the same high-quality resolution.

As a photographer, you may even consider upping the ante and going to the W-series that has far better displays and were primarily intended for graphics professionals. They are heavy, though. 

I would urge you to make sure (right-click on the desktop) that you are running at the full 900 pixel resolution.

What country are you in that you paid that much for a T420? In the USA they are not that expensive?

Im located in NYC.. and it cost so much  because i upgraded each and every part in this laptop, including a better graphic, memory, SSD drive etc.  but because i paid so much, and upgraded everything - i expected to get a machine that works at least as good as what i bought 5.5 years ago (T60).

So from what you say Lenovo now have worse screen quality than what they used to have few years back? thats really weird, and bad. and it means i dont have a specific bad screen, this is how all those screens look like?! cant believe this...

Its worse quality than what bad screens looked like in the 80s.  

and it doesnt really matter what resolution i use... on both i see the same pixels.

Already lost one month of work because of that issue :/

Did you have an IPS aka FlexView screen on the T60?

hmmmm i have no idea. what is it exactly?

All i know is that it was a great screen, great colors, sharp, accurate... everything i ever needed.

ok i read now that flexview was only for the 15" T60 laptops... i had 14", so i guess i didnt have it.

Okay. The 14" T60 SXGA+ wasn't bad in my experience, but was quite lacking in color.

As a photographer, you probably should have gone with the 1920x1080 FHD screen on the T520, which offers 95% of NTSC gamut. The X220 has a 1366x768 IPS screen, but doesn't offer much in terms of gamut coverage and is rather cramped, relatively speaking.
