Hi,
I have received my new T420si a few days ago ( 4170 CTO) and today I went out to get some ram for it. But I could not figure out how to install it.
Wait! I am not that noob about these things, I did install a few notebook memories in my day but I can't figure out where the second ram slot it. When I open the panel, I found a 4gb stick installed. on top of it there are some latches which look like ram latches, but I could not find an opening that I can slide the ram in a 45 degree angle and push down, and the latches a bit different than the bottom one. My ram is correct, I removed the factory installed one and tried the one I both and it is working fine.
It is just I could not find the second ram slot there? Could you help me out? What am I missing?

update: I am watching videos of insides of T420s and the ram area is different in mine. The ram is supposed to be entered into this white rectangle, right? People have two of those in videos, I have only one of them. Is there any chance my laptop is crippled in that way, that is, one of the ram slot is removed? (I have T420si 4170 CTO, with the i3 processor)

Why on earth did they install the stock ram on the easily available back panel slot!!?

I'm sure there are detailed studies to backup that decision. ![]()
I think if you buy a ThinkPad with a single 4GB SoDIMM, it is installed under the keyboard at the factory. If you decide to add another 4GB or 8GB stick, the convenient slot is already open.
The other convenient slot is the WWAN or mSATA SSD PCIe slot. I suppose it makes sense to have it convenient instead of under the keyboard.

I did buy it with a single dimm 4 gb ram, and I was expecting that they would use the under the keyboard slot for the stock ram, so that I can use the easily available slot. But it was not.. For some reason, they used the easy one for themselves, and left me with the hard one under the keyboard. Annoying! I could not remove the keyboard myself, so now I am looking for a service center to see if I can get them swap the ram for free. Really annoying!!!
