T500 - Does not boot, blank screen, hard disk seems to be spining

Dear Forum Members,

Hope you can help me with the following situation.

My T500 machine went into hibernation after the battery drain and after that I could not get it to start. I tried the "long press power botton", reseting cmos options but no luck. When I press the power botton, the machine tries to start (without a single line of text on LCD) and then immediately stops. The only light that shows is the "Z" marked LED. The hard disk seems to be spinning but the fan does not. If I press the power button again, the hard disk stops.

I removed the memory and hard disk and try to boot it, but it shows the same behavior and does not produce any beeps.

Could the issue be with the motherboard? My warrenty has expired, so I need to find a way to recover this machine. Could some one please shed some lights.

It certainly sounds like the motherboard, but, obviiously, it is impossible to diagnose fully without seeing it.

have you tried removing the battery and powering up?

Shahrul: Yes, I tried removing battery- >long press power button -> use AC adapter and try to boot approaches as well.

I still doubt if it has anything to do with the motherboard. Because, this happened with the power drainage.

Could be, is there any test that I can do. Something like beep checks? Please let me know.

remove the ram and start the laptop without out, does it make 1-3-3-1 beeps?

I hate to say it but it does seem like your system somehow got short circuited after the battery drained. You pretty much have already tried all of the troubleshooting steps. Usually when a PC comes on, HDD spins but does not load anything, Screen stays blank, no beeps or errors and all of the above steps have been followed the PC MoBo is dead. Most of the time by any type of surge.

I tried this as well. No beeps. Seems that the motherboard is the issue. I ordered a board. Let's see. Thank you for helping me with this.

Hi, My T500 just did the exact same thing as yours. Everything you said about yours is the same - I left it in sleep mode to find it off and when I try to reboot, it looks like power is on but the screen is blank and I get no beeps during tests. Had it diagnosed as a motherboard problem. In your posts you said that you were going to order a new motherboard. I was just wondering if you would be able to tell me if that fixed this problem for you. If so, did you order the motherboard yourself and install it yourself? Any thoughts on that process? Thank you very much for any info you might be able to provide. I hope your T500 is running again. I can truly sympathize with what you went through as I am facing it right now.
