T520/Win7 slow usb write speed - usb 2.0

Hi everybody!

Please could you help me with this annoying problem? I've tried almost everything...

Problem is with writing speed on usb memory sticks (NOT external HDD, they work fine). I tried multiple of them (2 brand new, Kingston and SIGMA, one old Corsair), writing speed is always between 2-3mbps, when writing on external HDD it peaks on typical 22-25mbps. Reading works fine.

Where could be a problem? When reading multiple forums i tried following:

new chipset drivers (from lenovo support thread)

uninstall and new install of USB host controllers

in usb flash disc settings set to "optimize for performance"

None of this helped.

Unfortunately the appearance of this topic on another forum is really often. And i did not find any solution.

Could you please provide me some additional information or tips? One tip I think about is generally new drivers of usb 2.0 but i couldn't find them.

The last thing what i can do is contact lenovo support and use on-site nbd warranty, but I'm not sure whether problem is on my thinkpad or in installed win 7. And if they can help me.

HW: Thinkpad T520 4240, one month old/ SW Win7 64bit.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: T520/Win7 slow usb write speed - usb 2.0

It sometimes depends on the quality of the flash drives. I have a few cheap ones that will write around 4-6MB/s, and a higher-end (but old) Sandisk Cruzer Titanium that will write at 14MB/s.

You can try reformatting as exFAT. That might work.

Strange that these terrible writing rates are on every of 3 drives... But anyway.

Tried to reformate as exFAT, no help. Than in NTFS, also without affect. Does change of alocation space affect the writing speed? Just for try i changed the alocation size on 16kb on classical FAT, nothing change.

What's next? Get some really hi-end pen-drive a try it?

Or some other advice? What about that problem exists only on non-powered device. Any suggestion?

USB thumb drives are powered by the USB port. So are the small enclosures that hold a 2.5" drive.

guys... sorry for the false alarm - but... three days of repairing slow usb ports, reinstalling drivers and reformatting drives with multiple choices of file system. to get the result that all of my pendrives are piece of crap.

just tried it on other pc, test with crystaldiskmark and get the same numbers.

anyway, thanks for your help!
