Run CPUZ to see what your processor clock speed is. Something may be causing it to throttle back.
Also try downloading a rescue disk to scan for virus/malware such as http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk
Failing that, reinstall the OS, before you install any other applications is it still slow? If so maybe get it looked at under warranty.

You said you checked for malware with Symantec and NOD32. Does that mean you have BOTH of them installed? If so, that alone can cripple your speed.
Also, how many fonts do you have installed?

I also have this problem but my thinkpad is only 3 days old! It is slower than my 4 year old acer with an i2 processor and half the ram.
Can anyone give me an idea of why it is so so so slow?
I have 2GB ram and i5, windows 7 premium.
Help?!
