Wi-fi HARDLY works on T400.

I just got my T400 about 3 weeks ago, and have been having problems with the wi-fi card since i got it.  i have the 5300 wi-fi card, and web pages load EXTREMELY slow and often times time out.  i've tried the wi-fi on several networks including home, office, several airports, a hotel, a convention center, all with these same slow results.  I've used the Lenovo system update application and it doesn't tell me that there are any upodates for the card.

 

i am very frustrated because this was an expensive laptop, and i'm pretty much unable to use the wireless at all.  what do you all recommend I do?
