My Thinkpad T410 (Windows 7, 64 bit) cannot make a proper connection to my HP J4580 Officejet printer/scanner/fax. In particular, the HP Solution Center typically displays the message "HP OfficeJet J4500 Series Disconnected!" And printouts more than a few kilobytes long are truncated or split over multiple pages in small strips. My wife's Dell (Windows 7, 32-bit) laptop does not have these issues with our printer, so the problem is either with Lenovo or with the 64-bit driver.

Does using another port help? What about reinstalling the driver? You may be able to force the 32-bit driver to install.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
If by 'different port' you mean, try one of the other USB sockets on my Thinkpad, then this doesn't seem to help. All of them are giving the same message about the printer being disconnected.
As for installing the 32-bit driver, I don't know how to do this, and I don't think it is possible. Here is a quote from a Microsoft website (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/3
"Device drivers designed for 32-bit versions of Windows won't work on computers running a 64-bit version of Windows. "
I've already tried reinstalling the 64-bit driver, but this didn't fix the problem.

Have you checked the HP support site? There seem to be quite a few Google hits on "HP OfficeJet J4500 Series Disconnected" which end up pointing to various places on that site.
Cheers,
