The hard drive is directly under the right palm rest; that's probably what you're hearing. I've noticed the "whoosh" sound in other ThinkPads (like T60) but not so much in my T500. I think it depends on the specific hard drive in yours. If you find the sound bothersome, you could swap in a single-platter hard drive (generally quieter), or better an SSD.
But anyway, I don't think the sound indicates that your hdd is defective. You could run PC Doctor or other diagnostics to make sure.
