Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

[ Edited ]

I did something bad on my Thinkpad T43 2668, now I have black screen on booting, can't Access IBM, can't press any Function Key, can't boot from CD.  Here's what I've done:

1. Got unwanted winxp sp3 automatic updates, then,  Restored to pervious point via Winxp system restore, then, can't boot  system; can't  boot from Winxp CD either;

2. Boot from Linux Live CD, formate harddisk and install ubuntu, Hidden Area Partition is not removed, still there;

3. Can boot Linux OS, but black screen at booting. There's no way to see what's going on at booting; Pressing any function key or IBM bottons doesn't return any result, still boot into Linux;

4. Can't boot from any legal bootable CD except Ubuntu Live CD;

5. No way to access Bios to set boot sequence, so, can't boot from USB floppy either;

Any advise is appreciated!

PS. I tried Linux live CD a while ago before this trouble, clicked "Help me boot from CD", got installed something. I guess that's something installed out of box and that's why currently I can boot from Linux Live CD.

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

To enter BIOS you need to press F1 at boot, when you see the IBM logo.

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

Since the OS is formated, all the function keys are not functional now.

There's no IBM logo, totally black screen at boot.

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

Find and remove the bios backup battery for 5 seconds, replace and reboot.

May be under the keyboard?

If it now boots properly, enter bios and set it up, date, time, boot order, etc.

How to "Find and remove bios backup battery"?

it's now boots properly under linux. How to enter Bios under Linux without the function keys ?

Some dis-assembly required! If you are not comfortable with this idea,

don't bother. Explore other solutions first.

Download Hardware Maintenance Manual HERE

Look for section Removing and replacing a FRU, Backup Battery.

I noticed in your original post that BEFORE the problem started you

ran a Linux live disk that had a feature "Help me boot from CD"

Which distro?

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

I read the PDF you pointed, that's too complicated and risky for a dummy like me. I'd prefer sort out other solutions.

The distro is Xubuntu

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

Found your thread over at ubuntu forums. Ubuntu

You said "No, they are all inactivated without the R&R files to active them after formated OS."

NOT true. F1 for bios should always work, F8 is a windows boot menu key, if windows is installed.

"Press any key to boot from cd..." only shows when using Windows disks.

I still think that when you chose some option to "help boot from cd", bios was changed,

leading to the current problem. Just my feeling.

And post version of Xubuntu used, may try it later.

Re: Black screen on booting, unable to boot from CD

F12 at boot can also be used to select the boot device
