CPU upgrade for Thinkpad T40

I have an old T40 Thinkpad. Its the 2373 Model. I was wondering what is the largest CPU upgrade you can get for this laptop. It has the original CPU inside, but I want to upgrade it. Another question, I was doing some research and it says the socket is a 479. Can I put a Intel Core Duo Processor in my T40 that has the same 479 socket. Thank you. If you were wondering, I did upgrade my memory from 512MB to 2GB, and I upgraded my hard drive to a 100GB. Thaks again

Re: CPU upgrade for Thinkpad T40

T40 have to use Bania series of Pentium M CPU, your T40 won't be able to use Core Duo processors...

Re: CPU upgrade for Thinkpad T40

The fastest CPU that T40 can utilize is Intel SL7V3, which is also known as PM 765, it's a Dothan-core CPU with 2MB L2 cache and 400 Mhz FSB, running at 2.1 Ghz.

Maximum memory is 2GB of either PC2100 (DDR 266Mhz) or PC2700 (DDR 333 Mhz) laptop RAM.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Re: CPU upgrade for Thinkpad T40

The 765 is the fastest CPU you can use in your T40.  However, they tend to run hot.  A 1.8 (745) or a 2.0 (755) may be a little cooler and you likely won't notice any difference vs a 2.1.

Re: CPU upgrade for Thinkpad T40

Agreed.

PM 745 = Intel SL7EN, 1.8 Ghz

PM 755 = Intel SL7EM, 2.0 Ghz.

Cheers,

George
