I've had this problem before and never came up with a solution:

I can't get audio working on my T42. When I try to install the Lenovo driver I get the message:
Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again.
Does anyone know another source for a driver that will install?
Thank you for your help.

Here's your audio driver:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.p
After downloading it and running it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Audio and run the setup file from there.
Good luck.

Thank you for replying and posting detailed instructions on how to install the SoundMax driver.
Unfortunately, this is exactly the driver that I downloaded and that gives me the error message:
Driver Not Found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again.
Of course, after rebooting I get the same error message.
Do you have any other ideas?
Regarless, thank you again for replying.

Interesting.
Could you boot from a Linux "live" CD and check whether you have sound there?

Hello,
Which operating system and service pack level is on the ThinkPad T42?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
I using Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3. I have downloaded and installed all critical and optional software and hardware updates identified by Windows System Update.
Please let me know if additional system configuration information would be helpful.

I use Mint, and it should work "out of the box" on any T4x machine:
http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=15
Burn it as an ISO file, and boot from it.
If there's no sound, you have a hardware problem.
If there is, there's a driver issue within XP.
Good luck.

Looks like an intermittent hardware problem.
Neither Mint nor Ubuntu Linux see the sound card. Also, Lenovo's ThinkVantage Toolbox can NOT see t he sound card.
However, every once in a while, Device Manager pops up saying that it's found new hardware (SoundMax) and needs a driver for it.
So, I'm wondering if I need to reseat some connector or daughter-board.
Any clues how to do this on a T42?
Thanks for your help.
