Fingerprint device not working at startup.

I support a T60 that displays: Cannot find fingerprint sensor device. at startup. I can check the device manager in WinXP and it shows the device is working properly. If I attempt to enroll a finger print, I get the same message as the log on. I have found that if I do a Fn+F4 and put the machine into standby, then use the same command to bring it back, it recognizes the device. Once the OS recognizes the device, I can swipe my finger to log-in, enroll new fingerprints and use all the functions. Lenovo tech support suggested to reinstall the OS. I have done this twice. I would love not having to rebuild this and 2 others displaying the same problem.
