Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

Hi I am having issues trying to get Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise x64 SP1 (and non-SP1)  installed on a T61 laptop. 7658-CTO.

When I put the disk in start the installation it asks for the drivers for the HD chipset, I provide the drivers which it detects but then it comes back and says it can't find any suitable devices. I tried the different versions of the driver, I have even switched the SATA setting from AHCI to Compatible and tried it again but it still requests a driver.

The hard drive inside the laptop is factory. I have installed the latest bios and checked to make sure the hard drive and DVD burner has the laster firmware as well but it still will not install.

I have only been able to get it working if I use my T410 Windows 7 restore DVD's and restore the entire OS there but of course the IBM partition for the system rebuild it no good to me.

Anyone have this problem and figured out a work around?

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

Hello,

That is very odd.  I have downloaded and installed both the Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 and Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 installation DVDs from MSDN and never had a problem installing them on that model of ThinkPad.  SATA was set to AHCI in the BIOS.  I do not recall ever being prompted for any device drivers for the drive controller during installation.

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

All windows installations prompt you to allow installation of harddrive drivers, but it's only necessary if you have unusual hardware. This is only an option to use if windows cannot detect your harddrive, just ignore that screen and install windows, it wil be effortless.

I'd recommend you delete any partitions and make new ones to make sure you've gotten rid of whatever drivers you were trying to get windows to use, then just let it install, and in the future, it's best not to complicate things, you don't need any drivers to get windows seven to install. After the install is done, run system update and it willl find you the latest drivers, don't try to get them from windows update, you're likely to get the wrong ones, it tends to give you the latest version regardless if they work on your system or not. The lenovo tool gets you the latest supported by your model.

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

You can't ignore the screen it wants the chipset drivers for the hard dirve, when it finds them on the disk I provided it tells me its unable to find the hardware yet the hard drive is the orignal IBM 160GB that came with the system. I guess I could try doing a DOD to the hard drive and seeing if that changes anything.

The difference in this machine is its a CTO, one of the things it has that most T61 don't is the seirra WWAN card.

You have your terms confused. The chipset drivers are for you system board, not yur harddrive. If you're trying to give windows drivers for a harddrive when it's looking for chipset drivers, it will never work. However, there is no need to provide any discs to do the install, you just need to boot from the setup disc and install windows.

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

chipset doesn't just mean the core chipset on the motherboard, the AHCI driver which is the Intel Matrix is a chipset on its own. I work as a level 2 tech and yet I know what I am doing...thanks I just need to figure why on this particular model of T61 does Windows 7 x64 want the matrix driver and then once it install it is not able to detect the hard drive?

I recall when I use to have my own T61 that I had to use the controler chipset driver to install Vista back in the day. At that point it worked, now with 7 it doesn't. MY T400 and W500 never had this problem.

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

Unless you have a modified windows setup disc that has drivers removed, it won't need any drivers at all to install. I've done this on every model of T61.

The intel matrix chipset drivers is for your system board, which has an integrated harddrive controller. If windows says it cannot find the device, that means your drivers are not the correct ones for a T61, it's not the harddrive it cannot find.

Re: Install Windows 7 x64 with/without SP1

Hello,

Have you tried putting the SATA drivers onto a USB flash drive and loading them that way during the installation?

Yes, its hard to load them any other way since the T61 doesn't have a floppy drive. :smileyhappy:
