Intermittent Wireless on T42

I've been running my wireless for several years now on my T42 Type 2378 RGU, when a few weeks ago I got "no Wireless networks found" type message. By process of elimination I determined that the probable culprit was my wireless card, an Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Adapter. I got the FRU number (FRU 27K9936) and ordered a replacement, which I installed 2 days ago. Booted back up, and still "no wireless networks found." I shut the computer off, and came back the next day. Turned it on from a cold boot, and the wireless was working! Hooray! But spoke to soon. Later that afternoon, I went back, and it was back to "no wireless networks found" while at the same time my T61 sitting right next to it was working fine on the wireless. the only thing I can surmise is that there is a loose connection somewhere, as I had turned my laptop upside down yesterday to replace the screw covers on the touchpad side of the computer. It was somewhat after that time that the wireless stopped working. I left the laptop on overnight, and today when I logged on, the wireless was working again!

So I'm thinking I need to find the most likely place for an intermittent connection. Any ideas? Where is the antenna located on the T42? Or anything else that might be causing this? I'm running Windows XP Pro sp3.

Thank you!

Re: Intermittent Wireless on T42

Welcome to the forum!

It's most likely a software bug. Nothing to do with the physical connection.

Are you running Access Connections or allowing Windows to control your network?

Cheers,

George

Re: Intermittent Wireless on T42

That would be great if it were a software bug, but I'm not sure how that could be. Especially that it happened so suddenly. I'm running ESET antivirus, and it's up to date...

Re: your question: I'm allowing Windows to control the network, and never had a problem with it in the past. Of course, I have been doing the recommended Windows updates, that could conceivably have changed something.

Re: Intermittent Wireless on T42

One way to detrmine for sure whether it's a hardware or a software problem would be to boot from a "live" Linux CD.

If your wireless works in Linux, there's a driver/software issue within XP.

If it doesn't, we need to start looking at the hardware...

My suggestion - since I know it works out of the box on T4x machines:

Good luck.

George

You hit the nail on the head! Wireless works fine with Linux. So I went ahead and used the Access Connections, but had to update my old version before it worked. But now it works great! Thanks so much!

<<I'm always happy to help a fellow ThinkPad owner.>>

Yes, indeed! I LOVE my ThinkPad. I'm on my 4th or 5th generation of ThinkPads (I think I started on a 361 or something like that.) I just bought a refurbished T61 to use as a backup to my workhorse T42.

Cheers to you, too!

Re: Intermittent Wireless on T42

I have determined that my T42 2378 R4U ThinkPad has a bad network adapter.

I am trying to find instructions for replacing it with a new one.

I suspect there are instructions but I have been unsuccessful finding them.

Re: Intermittent Wireless on T42

Everything you need to know is in the HMM:

Essentially, the keyboard and palmrest have to come off, you should be done in less than half an hour even if you've never done this before.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George
