Mounting system HDD in Ultrabay caddy?

I want to install a new, faster HDD in place of the one with my T61 (7659D22) came and mount the original system HDD in an UltraBay caddy. The no-name caddy I have looks a little different from the picture in the manual for the genuine 40Y8746: it has little plastic protrusions under which the drive screws might fit once the drive has been slid forward far enough for the connectors to mate. Unfortunately, the only way I can get the connectors to mate is if I insert the HDD at an angle (as shown in the 40Y9746 instructions), but then the plastic protrusions foul the screw heads and I cannot press the drive flat down into the caddy.

Which would be better? Trim those plastic protrusions? Or not use the screws that hold the cover in place over the drive's electronics? -- and maybe dispense with that cover altogether?

Or is there something I'm totally overlooking?

did you take the caddy tray off the hdd the hdd when used in the UltraBay does not need the caddy I mean the little metal tray that has 4 screws & 2 rubber rails

That's what I am thinking of doing, although the User Guide for the UltraBay caddy seems to show the drive *with* the cover plate secured by screws on the sides. BUT the caddy shown in that picture dos *not* have protrusions of any kind where my after-market one does.

At present I have the cover plate in place but without the screws. The plastic protrusions press the sides of the cover firmly against the base of the drive.

I found that if I lay the drive (with cover and screws in place) flat at the back of the caddy, I can -- with sufficient force (I used a wooden piece like an oversized tongue depressor) -- push it forward so that the connectors mate and the screw heads fit under those plastic protrusions.
