Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers: Please Consider One Last Update for the Road

[ Edited ]

The title of this new thread says it all ..... 3 years since the last offical Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Driver Package release ..... a virtual lifetime in computer science years.

I'm looking for advice on how to best lobby the technical folks at Lenovo (by phone or here on the Forums) for one last official Lenovo "Nvidia" video driver update for our T61 and T61p units.

Lenovo's most current "ancient" 2009 Nvidia driver packages (found here),

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001342

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003876

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003605

all leave quite a bit of 3D (and some 2D) performance laying out there on the table based on my own testing with current modern Nvidia reference drivers on a cloned test mule hard drive (and never once crashed with the newer Nvidia reference drivers under WinXP 32-bit or Win7 32 bit).

Most all the major 3D gaming benchmarks were nearly doubled, and most importantly, my real world qualitative performance experience seemed even greater than the nearly doubled quantitative benchmark results.

I'm wondering if starting this new thread would be of any benefit to encourage the good folks at Lenovo to consider one last update after 3+ years?

Before I go to the trouble of posting my results, it is my hope that Lenovo could simply try the latest Nvidia reference drivers for themselves, tweak them (if even necessary) and then issue one last offical T61/T61p Nivida driver package update for the road .... hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of T61/T61p w/Nvidia GPU units are still in reliable daily service.

http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Something to please consider.

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers - Please Consider One Last Update for the Roa

Hi eecon

You could first install all the drivers from Lenovo / OEM, then update your drivers from the hardware vendor to have more performance or function enhancement. (such as Intel, NVIDIA, etc.)

From what I know, even other manufacturer does not provide new driver for older systems.

Have a nice day! :smileytongue::smileyhappy::smileyvery-happy:

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers - Please Consider One Last Update for the Roa

Thanks for posting. I'd like to see a simple step by step guide to update to the latest (we'll call them experimental) drivers form nVidia for our T61/T61p discrete models. I'd also like to see your test results. I'd be willing to do some testing myself and share the results too, perhaps we can compile some useful information. Once we have some real facts to offer, I'll speak to Mark, see if he can pass the request up the chain of command...   thne hopefully someone (at lenovo) will find it in their heart to invest the time in such an old product and get the drivers approved for distributiion

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers - Please Consider One Last Update for the Roa

[ Edited ]

Procedure is like PeterTWJ says:

1. Make sure you have Lenovo's latest drivers first and are running stable;

2. Make sure you have all the latest Lenovo System Updates and Windows Updates;

3. Back up your system or use a spare cloned HDD as I did where you don't care if it crashes;

4. Download one of the newer Nvidia WHQL reference drivers and Release Notes file for your specific GPU (the Quadro Notebook FX570M in my case) from the link in my OP or one of the links below .... Recommend you use my Original Post link and the AutoDetect Option to ensure you download the proper driver .... otherwise,  make sure you choose the Quadro ODE version for your FX or NVS and also the "Notebook" version if you try to manually pick your correct driver from this following link (avoid the 3D gaming version and autocad version) .... AutoDetect will give you their ODE version;

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Here are two of the most common choices for your convenience if you abhore using the AutoDetect option:

Quadro FX570M Notebook Driver 265 family link for WinXP 32-bit latest Nvidia WHQL reference driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-notebook-winxp-x32-296.35-whql-driver.html

Quadro FX570 Notebook Driver 265 family link for latest Win7 32-bit latest Nvidia WHQL reference driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-notebook-win7-winvista-296.35-whql-driver.html

Release Notes File Link for the FX570M WinXP:

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/Quadro_Certified/296.35/296.35-winxp-quadro-notebook-release-n...

Release Notes File for the FX570M Vista/Win7:

http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/Quadro_Certified/296.35/296.35-win7-winvista-quadro-notebook-r...

5. Read the Nvidia Release Notes File carefully (two times);

6. Run the Nvidia download and the installer will handle the rest.

For instance, on my T61P units (configured as per my signature line below) I get the following typical results:

3DMark06:

Lenovo 2009 drivers (from 2009):

4461  w/WinXP Pro-SP3 32-bit

4482  w/Win7 Ultimate-SP1  32-bit

Nvidia 265 WHQL Family Series of Reference Drivers (latest available ODE versions v296.35 for WinXP and v296.35 for Win7):

7925  w/WinXP Pro-SP3 32-bit

9001  w/Win7 Ultimate-SP1  32-bit

But the 3D actually seems 3 or 4 times smoother and faster to my eyes.

Also, the reason for the extra big jump in Win7 results with the newer Nvidia drivers is that they fully support Directx10 (and now also 11), and WinXP does not support Directx10.  Also, the old outdated 2009 Lenovo drivers still had some unresolved issues with their Directx10 support (Vista/Win7).   Those issues have been addressed by the newer Nividia reference drivers.  Note that our Nvidia Quardo FX or NVS GPUs are Directx10 capable (but not Directx11) ..... So, this is at least one very good reason IMHO for the good folks at Lenovo to update their Nvidia drivers one last time to allow everyone to take full advantage of their T61/T61p discete video hardward's capabilities for Directx10.

Happy gaming ..... Cheers

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers - Please Consider One Last Update for the Roa

Hi eecon

You are right. However, I would skip the 3rd step you listed down. Normally, it will be safe if you update with a newer version of driver after installing drivers from lenovo / oem. If it crashes, you could simply go to Safe Mode, go to Start, Control Panel, Device Manager to roll back to the previous working driver. Up till now, I have not met any problems using this procedure, same for the Intel Chipset or other kind of graphic card.

By the way, the NVIDIA driver version 300 are coming soon, that would even boost more performance and provide better functionality. There is beta version of driver version 300, but it is not recommended if this is your main / production system or stability is a need.

PeterTWJ .... Thank you for the good the advice.

BTW, also note that Lenovo has only issued one release of Win7 Nvidia drivers (Oct 2009) for T61/T61p owners with not one single update .... that is very sad, regardless of the fact that Win7 was released only one year after the T61/T61p series was phased out in Sept/Oct 2008:

I tried these Nvidia R300 beta drivers on a T61p Win7 32-bit system and they boosted my Win7 benchmark results another 10% from my previously posted results, however the qualitative visual feel felt like they were even better than a mere 10% ..... also, no stability issues so far (at least on my clean install Win7 32-bit test mule system).

Thanks!

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers - Please Consider One Last Update for the Roa

Hi eecon

It is considered fortunate that Lenovo provides newer driver for newer OS even after the system was phased out. From what I know, most of the OEM / manufacturers do not provide drivers for newer version of Windows when the product is phased out.

Furthermore, graphic card vendors (e.g. NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, etc.) oftenly release new drivers and it is hard for manufacturers to catch up with them. Usually, the purpose of OEM providing new driver is to resolve existing issues. If you need performance, get newer drivers directly from vendors website.

Have a nice day! :smileytongue::smileyhappy::smileyvery-happy:

Re: Official 2009 Lenovo T61/T61p Nvidia Video Drivers: Please Consider One Last Update for the Road

I like to live dangerously, so I went to

http://www.geforce.com/drivers#

asked them for auto detection (used Explorer for that), got correct identification of my  graphic card in my T61p (XP, latest updates, Lenovo latest updates), it identified my old Lenovo drivers, offered an update, I downloaded it (113M), installed with express setup, (not clean install), to keep my settings (docking station and 28 inch Hannspree 1920x1200 monitor, it installed without hitch or complain, asked me to reboot the computer, I did, both monitors came up with identical view on them, I started Nvidia control panel, it came up as version 4.3.940, I set my settings and everything looks OK.

NVIDIA Desktop nanager is version 112.09, but I am not using it.

My NVIDIA drivers are shown as 6.14.10.11209, with the exception of 2

NVWDDI.DDL

and

NVCPL.DDL, which are both version 6.14.12.9670

and it tells nView Desktop manager component file versions are valid. Status is OK.

[ Edited ]

@radekpletka ..... Thanks for the info.

Since your new 296.70 drivers were just released this morning, please keep us posted over the next few weeks on how things are running with your newer drivers plus your qualitative and quantitative observations.

My two cloned T61p test mules are still running fine 24-7 with the one-step earlier 296.35 Nvidia drivers under both WinXP and Win7 with absolutely no crashes in 2D mode or 3D gaming ..... Unlike the final issue old official Lenovo Nvidia Drivers which would crash on some 2D apps and many 3D games from 2007/2008+.

I now believe I can bypass my usual 4 to 5 year hardware upgrade cycle thanks to these newer Nvidia reference drivers breathing new life into my T61p units' 3D-AutoCad and 3D-gaming capabilities and pass on the savings to my large corporate clients by not raising my hourly billing rates this year.    I'll recommend to their IT department heads to consider squeezing another year or so out of their own systems by first testing out these newer Nvidia reference drivers for themselves.
