Slow response to keyboard action on T41

After an automatic windows update, my T41 (2379 DKU) is operating extremely slow.  It boots fine, but it is taking several minutes to respond to a keystroke.  The cursor moves around the screen correctly, everything else is extremely slow.  CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task manager takes several minutes to open.

 

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

If I start the system in safe mode, everything seems to operate normaly.  System is not usable in normal windows XP start up -- response to open a program is to slow and eventually system hangs.  It seems that a right click will hang the system.

the slow response is typically due to high CPU usage or RAM usage, what did you update recently???
