Have two ThinkPad T61p Type 6459-CTO. Both running Windows XP Pro. I cannot boot into safe-mode on either of them.
Pressing F8 during boot does give me the option but they always blue screen before reaching the safe-mode desktop with a stop 0x0000007b.
They do boot to the regular desktop
I need to access safe mode for software repair
Thanks

A stop 7b indicates the mis-match between bios and the hard drive controller driver.
Check bios for AHCI status.
F1 at post into bios
Config -> Serial ATA
Change from AHCI to Compatable or vice versa and then boot.
Correct IMSM driver here:

Thanks Terry.
The driver update, while not eagerly accepted by the machine, has worked for one of them so far.

I have a T61 (model 6457-6nu) and I can't get it to boot in ACHI mode either - even after trying this driver.

Did you go to 'C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE' and then double-click install.cmd to install the driver? the instructions on the page needs to be followed for this.
Hope it helps.
