T20 won't start

I have a ThinkPad T20. I was using it a few minutes ago and in the middle of my work it just shut down on its own. I tried turning it back on but it won't. I thought it was a power problem. I removed the battery and plugged it in. Nothing happened. I put the battery on again and turned it on. It was ok for a few minutes and turned off again. I pressed the power button one more time and before it would turn off I was able to press the F1 or F2 button for the BIOS. It says "Error 0175: Bad CRC1, stop POST task." What is that? Is my motherboard fried? Can this be fixed? I really need your help. Thank you so much I have a T20 Pentium III with Microsoft XP Pro.

Re: T20 won't start

Having looked at the error codes in the Hardware Maintainance Manual it would seem your worst fears are confirmed.
It maybe you can buy a mainboard somewhere, (e-bay etc.), in the manual you will be able to see which FRU (part nr.) you need.

Re: T20 won't start

Basically, there's nothing I can do other than buying a motherboard? Would it be advisable to buy a new laptop then? Why is it that when I searched on-line, there are alot of ThinkPad user who has the same problem I do. They have the "error 0175 bad crc1, stop post task". By the way... thanks Andy.

Re: T20 won't start

Unfortunately, the CRC error can occur if the boot process is cancelled while it is accessing the BIOS (ie. killing the power during the boot process)....or during a botched BIOS update.

While the above example is the most common cause for this error, there are other fluke incidents that can cause the same error.

For the record, I have a T23 that rec'd the error while I was booting it without a ram cover in place, and there was a loose screw sitting underneath.  I think that it might have shorted the EEPROM.  (I have since learned to be more careful)

Error 0175: Bad CRC1, stop POST task.

Hi. My T20 just stopped working and it's showing this message "error 0175: bad crc1, stop post task". What should I do? Can this be fixed? Any thoughts guys. I hate to throw my laptop away. Thanks.

Re: Error 0175: Bad CRC1, stop POST task.

you can try to reflash the BIOS (3.5" disk version found here).   outside of that i'm not sure.   the hardware maintenance manual for the T20 doesn't give a solution for an error 0175 and simply says "system board" indicating a full replacement of the planar.

this is the least untruthful answer i can give.Microsoft MVP

Re: T20 won't start

Replacing the BIOS chip is not an easy matter on these boards.
