T42 keyboard rollover beep in Windows 98se.

I am running Windows 98se on a T42 laptop and everything works fine except for the keyboard beeping everytime I press 3 or more keys at a time. This is extremely annoying when typing quickly and playing games.

I have tried this logical solution: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Keyboard-causes-beeps-dings/ta-p/491705 however latest T42 BIOS does not have a 'Keyboad beep' option to disable.

I have also tried this solution: http://www.intelliot.com/2006/12/thinkpad-keyboard-beeps-fixed/ but Windows 98se does not have a 'Show hidden devices/Non-plug and play' section to disable that beep device.

I also tried turning on the FilterKeys in Accessibility Properties which stopped the beep but caused some buttons to not work at all while others were pressed.

I am hoping someone can help me resolve this problem. Thanks.

Can I suggest Windows XP?  

Or at very least Windows 2000, which you can get used for less then $20.

ps. sorry I'm not more help, but I haven't used win9x in so long that it's hard to remember it's abilities, but you can easily install a second windows version without removing your win98, if you like it. You'd just need to resize your partition and install in a newly made partition and windows will setup a boot menu when you install.

The reason I'm using window 98 is because I have spindals of software and games from that era in computing that cannot be used on newer operating systems. I never thought this would be such an issue but it seems I might have to search for a different latptop.

As I stated in my last reply, you don't have to remove your win98 in order to install a newer version, you can use both, so no need to get a new laptop.

Installing WinXP serves no purpose for my problem. The software and games I'm running is for Win95/98 only.

Hello,

It has been many years since I have used Windows 98SE.  Is there a BEEP device driver in the SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI files?  If so, have you tried commenting it out to see if that disables the beeping noise?

I went through the system.ini file and could not find anything along the lines of beep, alarm or rollover in regards to keyboard errors. The beep is definitely coming from the motherboard, but the bios has nothing to turn it off. Apparently it can be disabled in the bios on other Thinkpads (As per my first post) so I guess the only solution is to find another Thinkpad or another laptop altogether.
