So I was recently presented with a T42P and told the CD rom didn't work. It didn't even show up in the hardware list. They even tried replacing the cdrom without success so I said I would take a look at it. What I have come to find is that the connection interface doesn't reach the connector on the MB. Inspecting both the connector on the MB and on the CD Rom shows they will clearly mate. The CD rom fits perfectly into the chassis but it seems the MB connector is some how to far away.
Has anyone run into this? Is there an intermediate adaptor for the T42p's? What am I missing?
I will link some pics below. Bad quality because they are from my phone but you can see there is slightly less than an inch gap from the cdrom to the MB connector.

There may be a connector missing that attaches to the optical drive itself.

After much research I have finally answered my own question. There is a missing part called an "Interposer Card". Someone must have lost it with a prior cdrom I am guessing. I figured t out after looking at an exploded view here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-46474.html and item #23 looked to be where I would require something to attach this cd rom device.
