One of the lasers in your drive may have failed.  There is no way to readily test a laser, you just find that the drive can't read disks.  Given the service life of any T43 by now its got to be reasonably high possibility.

There are separate lasers for CD and DVD reading, so you may still be able to read DVDs... have you tried that?

Nope   the same DVD i use to install windows 7 does not read either

the left side of explorer does not show the D drive (cd/DVD)  [ under the "computer']

but when i select the computer the left pane shows C: (hard drive) and Dcd/dvd drive) as devices with removable storage

My device manager shows the model and driver installed properly and no exclamation mark

Time to replace the media drive in my opinion.
