Hi, and welcome to the forum and sorry to hear you too have suffered failure of a nVidia gpu. Regarding your questions for Mark, I cannot and will not speak for Mark, nor for Lenovo, but I can tell you what mark has posted about this issue in another topic.

I can't reply to every comment here because there really isn't anything else that I can do to help those who are well beyond the warranty period on these. If I don't reply, I know I frustrate some people, but if I just reply that I can't help them, then that seems a no-win as well.
I'm not saying he won't reply, I just don't want you to understand why he may not be able. Lenovo did fix these for over a year even when well beyond the warranty limit, but obviously free repairs had to be limited, this policy was in effect from march 1st 2010 to march 31st 2011. At this point your best option is to get a used system board, many forum members have fixed theirs and it really isn't that difficult.

zhan,
Not sure what to advise... it could be a hardware problem, but I would try reloading the video drivers and going into bios and reloading defaults, save and exit first. Might solve the isuse.
Next...
You could also try removing the fan and heatsink - clean all the dust out, wipe away all the dried thermal grease from CPU and GPU and on the heatsink, and reapply a pea sized dab of artic silver to the CPU and GPU and re-install. Be sure not to remove the silicon pad that provides contact on the southbridge (I believe) chip.
If it is a thermal problem, this might resolve.
If it is a deeper hardware problem - the GPU or other component on the board going bad, you will need the board replaced as a last resort. Unfortunately, extended coverage on these has expired.
Wish I could offer more help.

Afternoon All,
A friend's computer (ThinkPad R61 15.4", M/T: 8918-5QG) has a faulty NVIDIA based motherboard - please can you provide a recommendation on a replacement compatible Intel Graphics based motherboard, so I can help my mate get it purchased & installed.
Thanks in advance

Mark_Lenovo is correct at this point but offers some good advice about keeping your system clean.
Once you've got a clean running system with fresh Arctic Silver thermal compound and are ready to double your 3D gaming performance, try updating your Nvidia drivers per these threads because they will run even cooler from my own experience:

Hey Tuus
My T61 7662CTO died, I know I need mobo 41W1489.
Would you mind to discuss options to upgrade or recomend service repair center?Plaese.
Thank you
I also replied to you privately, but for the benefit of all, your 14.1" widescreen has the older design board (41w1489) that supports only Merom class processors. It was replaced with 42w7867 in early 2008, then later both boards were replaced with 44c3933, which would be the board I'd recommend, but any of the three will work.

Bump, any recommendations folks for a ThinkPad R61 15.4", M/T: 8918-5QG - cheap confirmed Intel X3100 graphics based motherboard. Cheers

The 14.1" widescreen T61 and R61 share the same systemboards, but the 15.4" R61 has a unique board and are very uncommon here in the usa, so my best advice would be to upgrade to a T series, most of your servicable parts would work, harddrives, optical drives, ram, ac adapter and batteries are the same in both models. Finding one with the updated nVidia chip won't be easy, but I replied to your PM with some info on that. The Intel graphics is also not very common on the 15.4" units, but you cannot install a board from a T series in your R series, so any boards you find will likely cost more then the unit is worth (in my opinion).
