T61 Wireless Connectivity Issue - can not connect with secure wireless sites

I have a T61 using Windows XP. The internal wireless card was factory installed and has not been upgraded.

My home Internet is Comcast high-speed.

When I take my laptop to a coffee shop, business or other location with a secure wireless network that requires a password, I have not been able to log on. I can see the wireless networks available and can click on the appropriate one, but I never get a window/pop-up box/screen in order to allow me to enter the wifi network's user name and password.

Is this a firewall issue, wireless card issue...or?

I can access unsecured wireless networks where a password is not needed.

Re: T61 Wireless Connectivity Issue - can not connect with secure wireless sites

Lisa,

Thanks for joining after tweeting your troubles.   I'm sure we can figure this out - there is a lot of help available from experienced community members here.

The hardware and drivers all seem to be working since you can connect to unsecured networks, and can "see" other networks.   Seems just a configuration setting.

Are you using the built in Windows networking or are you using Lenovo's access connections?

For Access Connections, you would create a new profile for that location and specify the encryption type, etc.

Let us know which you are using to connect and we'll get more into the specifics.

Thanks!

Mark

I use Access Connections to connect to wireless networks.

Hi Lisa, most places like coffee shops, food chains, hotels, truck stops and other WiFi hotspots use a browser like login. If you click to connect to one does it say if you connect or not? If you connect you will have to try to surf then it will forward you to there login webpage. If not please respond back.

More info on WiFi here.

Re: T61 Wireless Connectivity Issue - can not connect with secure wireless sites

Hello,

Have you verified you have all the latest drivers and ThinkVantage software loaded on the T61?  You can do so by running the ThinkVantage System Update application, if you have not already done so.

Regards,

For WiFi networks that are password protected but is specifically intended for public access, you will generally need to open a web browser session.  The "captive portal page" of network should then be disp-layed with instructions for logging onto the network.

For WiFi networks which are password protected and not intended for public access, you will generally need to manually configure the password setting in an Access Connections profile for the network concerned, prior attemoting to connect to the network concerned.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi lisapapp!

One more thing to check: Is your Windows XP up to date? Older XP releases do not support the newer wireless encryption types which are now in common use (WPA, WPA2). Make sure you have SP3.

Re: T61 Wireless Connectivity Issue - can not connect with secure wireless sites

Lisa,

I think community has provided a lot of good suggestions here.   I'll add in a link to the user guide for Access Connections version 5.2 for XP - not sure which version you are running, but the basics remain the same.

In the few times I have traveled and had wireless in a hotel room or ariport, it has worked as BillBolton notes, that I select Find Networks, select one of the access points and it will either connect or come back with a message saying that the network is using a different type of security and to check with the admin.

If it connects, then open a browser and you are then typically re-directed to an intranet page where you will put in an ID and/or password that is provided by the venue.

If it won't connect and you are referred to change your security settings, check page 52 in the guide I linked to as it has more details there on the security and wireless settings within a profile.

But generally, you would then create a new profile, name it (can delete it later if you don't return to the site) and go through the screens - typically selecting obtain DNS and IP automatically, and then when you get to the encryption type is when you would need to have asked whether it is 64 bit or 128 and type - WEP, etc and what the key is.  You would input those things and complete the profile.  When you go to that location, you would select that profile from the pull down and it should then connect

Best regards,

Mark
