Re: T61 and Solid State Drive Upgrade -- Questions

I would like to upgrade my HDD to Seagate Momentus XT 500GB 7200 with 4GB of SSD Hybrid Drive. The Momentus XT is 2.5inch 9.5mm thick so I think it will physically fit my T61 (6465-02U). As I have read on this forum, it looks like I will need to upgrade to the "middleton" BIOS in order to take advantage of the Momentus XT  SATA 3GB/s speed. I have the full set of "Recovery" discs from Lenovo and plan to install to new Momentus XT to bring T61 back to original "as shipped" status with XP Pro. If I upgrade to "middleton" BIOS, will this work as planned and give me full performance on the Momentus XT HDD??

Thanks,

I'd recommend you read some of the reviews of these hybrid drives before getting one, there are a lot of complaints of poor performance, hanging, faulty firmware...   and the T61 already has a similar option called Intel turbo memory, it's basically the same thing as a hybrid drive. It wasn't well received because it didn't seem to make a huge difference in performance, but at the time a 1GB chip cost $50, today you can buy it for $10, but you won't want to use it if you'r installing an SSD.

As far as the middleton bios, it won't change anything in regards to installing your system, but if you want to use an SSD, I'd get rid of windows XP, get Vista or Seven, which are designed with native SSD support.

Also consider if you use the recovery discs, they're going to install 3-4yo drivers and apps, all of whcih will need to be updated/replaced. A more current windows disc followed by running system update would give you a more upto date system without a lot of wasted time/effort, and without a lot of bloated and redundant outdated software.

Yes, I use it on my T61p and it works very well. Just be very careful when updating a bios, if it's not done properly it can ruin the system board.

Re: T61 and Solid State Drive Upgrade -- Questions

Hi,

From this link, http://forum.notebookreview.com/6501443-post75.html ,

" T61, T61p
 R61 (14.1" widescreen with IEEE 1394): 7732, 7733, 7734, 7735, 7738, 7742, 7744, 7751, 7753, 7754, 7755" were the only models listed.

Will this work on a T61 7664-A12 , 14.1" widescreen (1440 X 900) with IEEE 1394,   T7500 (2.2 GHz), 4GB RAM?

I am planning to upgrade the original WDC WD1600BEVS-08RST2 harddisk. AFAIK, it is 160 GB and 5400 RPM to a Force Series™ 3 120GB SATA 3 6Gb/s Solid-State Hard Drive.

Any thoughts?

The middleton bios works on ALL T61 and T61p, so the text you copied claims. It then goes on to tell you which R61 versions it's compatible with.

I use this bios on all my T61 series, but understand that this is not an official Lenovo product and you should consider it experimental.

You should also understand and accept the risk involved with updating a bios. Attempting to update a bios on an unstable system, can destroy your system board, so don't do it unless you're willing to accept the risk. Also understand that the controller in your T61 will support SATA2 with this patch, you can run this SATA3 drive, but only at SATA2 speeds.

Re: T61 and Solid State Drive Upgrade -- Questions

Thanks Tuus for the quick reply.

I totally missed what it meant. Anyway, if I don't update the bios which will then limit the system to SATA I, will I notice any difference in speed from the original WDC WD1600BEVS-08RST2 (5400 RPM)?

The original drives these came with are sata1, so it won't make any differene, but if you upgrade to any sata2 drive, there will be some difference, but to really notice a difference you'd need something fast, like an SSD.

There are also other advantages to this bios, such as removal of the whitelist that blocks non lenovo branded wifi cards, and a few other enhancements I'd best not discuss here.

Re: T61 and Solid State Drive Upgrade -- Questions

Forgot to mention the ssd part. Yes, I have bought it already (Force Series™ 3 120GB SATA 3 6Gb/s Solid-State Hard Drive)  and I am currently installing a fresh windows 64.

Thanks for the replies.

(BTW, I left the official bios on... I'll do the modified bios maybe in a couple of months)

Cheers

Re: T61 and Solid State Drive Upgrade -- Questions

You cannot flash the bios from a 64bit OS, so if your old drive has a 32bit os, boot from it when your ready to do the bios update. There is a bootable cdrom version of the bios that can be used if you don't have a 32 bit os, but I believe the 32bit version is much safer.
