so if you manually start the media player, does it work?

I can bring up the media player manually, but it does not perform any functions, because it doesn't recognize a CD or DVD has been inserted into the laptop. For instance, I click the rip or burn commands and the player instructs me to insert the CD. I do, but the player doesn't respond. Thanks.

Is DLA enabled on your drive? I've seen that cause some pretty strange problems.
Right click on the drive icon and look for a DLA tab.

Downloaded VLC, computer indicates download successful, however there is no icon for the VLC player. when attempting to play CD through WMP I recieved the following: cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. Thanks
