T61p does not initialize replacement SSD drive ( Crucial CT128M4SSD2)

Crucial says that their 128GB SSD drive works with T61p's per the link below.   See the staff post from 1/6/2012.   I get an initialization error (1).

http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/T61p-does-not-recognize-CT128M4SSD2/m-p/78022#M23...

Is there some initialization process that is required?  I was hoping that this SSD would give me a few more good years of performance from my old T61P.

Thank you !

Steve

Re: T61p does not initialize replacement SSD drive ( Crucial CT128M4SSD2)

Hello,

From looking at that web page, it seems that some do work and some do not.  You might want to contact Crucial and see if your ThinkPad is on the list of those that work.

Re: T61p does not initialize replacement SSD drive ( Crucial CT128M4SSD2)

I've read some bad reports about crucial ssd drives. I'm not sure about this model, but it seems the ones I looked at had a failure rate more then twice that of standard hdd models. Although I'm sure their performance is great (when they work), but to me it's far more important that it protects my data and from what I've heard, when they fail, they don't do it gracefully, they just stop working and all your data is gone in an instant.

Regardless of how fast it is, or how long the warranty, any drive that randomly deletes all my data wouldn't be worth the price, even if it was free.

My suggestion is you look at the Intel drives. I've used the 320 series on T61p units with no problem at all.

Good luck

One additional thought, have you checked your bios setting for sata and if it's set to compatibility mode, try changing it. This is a longshot, but perhaps crucial requires full sata support to work. It's certainly worth a try.

Changing from AHCI to Compatibility mode didn't make a difference.  Does anyone know where to get a certified list of compatible equipment?

Actually I was thinking that compatibility mode may have been the problem, not the reverse, but it was only a wild guess. I'd be inclined to think the drive is defective. If you look at crucial's track record with SSD drives, they sell a lot of new ones that just don't work. If I were you I'd get a refund and buy an Intel, or at very least get it exchanged, hopefully the replacement will work.

Also I recommend getting the replacement from the retailer, not the manufacturer, they will give you new, where the manufacture will give you a repaired drive.

Re: T61p does not initialize replacement SSD drive ( Crucial CT128M4SSD2)

Hello,

Since the T61p ceased manufacturing before Crucial introduced this model of SSD, I think any per-model testing would have been done by them and not Lenovo.  I do have a an earlier 64GB Crucial model (CT64M225.SAB2) in a newer ThinkPad (X120e) and it is working fine so far, so this issue may just be limited to that particular model of SSD and T61p.  I have an 80GB Intel X25-M in my T61p and that seems to work okay, too.

Re: T61p does not initialize replacement SSD drive ( Crucial CT128M4SSD2)

I have just installed a ocz ssd drive. I had to format the drive in bios. When I just installed it in the ultrabay drive it didnt show up.
